As a qualified teacher with 25 years teaching experience in schools and on a one to one basis, I offer personalised tuition in Maths and English to school children and adults, based on each student's specific tuition needs. My tutoring service has enabled hundreds of students to reach their maximum learning potential in Maths and English, from Key Stage 1 to GCSE levels. It is always rewarding to see my students grow in confidence in their own abilities and achieve improved results in school tests.

How would you describe your teaching style?

My teaching approach is calm and encouraging, allowing each child to develop their skills at their own pace of learning. Lessons are based on each child`s individual strengths, interests and abilities which helps them to build confidence in their own abilities in Maths and English. Also, by engaging with each pupil on a cognitive level, it is possible to establish a positive rapport with them.

What qualifications do you have?

I attained a BA (Honours) Degree in Social Studies, Class II Division II in 1983. I also achieved a PGCE in Primary Education in 1987

Tell us about your experience...

I am a PGCE qualified teacher in Primary Education where my subject specialism is Special Educational Needs, with 15 years of school teaching experience. My main areas of expertise are English and Maths, where I can quickly diagnose a student`s tuition needs and plan personalised lessons to help them to reach their learning targets. Subsequently, I have taught many students with various learning difficulties, such as dyslexia. For example, I tutored a boy a few years ago who was in Year 6 and identified as having moderate dyslexia. During the 3 years that I tutored him, his confidence in his abilities in English increased significantly to such an extent that his grade increased from a Level 3 to the national average in Year 9 to a Level 5. Since becoming a Private Tutor 20 years ago, I have helped around 1000 students to increase and often exceed their grades in Maths and English, sometimes by up to three grades. I chose to stop my work as a supply teacher five years ago so that I could focus my attention on my tutoring business full time. I embrace all opportunities to keep up to date with developments in the National Curriculum and examination boards, sometimes attending training days provided by the NEU, of which I am a member. As well as tutoring school children, I have also successfully coached adult learners for National Skills Tests such as the QTS tests and Functional Skills testd, as well as students who speak English as a second language, for GCSE English and Maths exams. Additionally, I tutor students in entrance test preparation skills for the 11 plus exams. I am always extremely proud of them when they exceed their predicted grades in their exams or gain entry into their chosen independent school. Here are some recent case studies: `Thank you Tina for helping me to take a long way in a very short time. My English was grade 2 at the beginning of the year 11. With the support from Tina, I have achieved grade 5 in both English Language and Literature. Thank you so much.` Ihsan, GCSE student, Beverley Grammar school. `Tina`s teaching style allowed me to learn at my own pace and she always had a clear plan for each lesson.` Ellen, QTS Numeracy skills student, Lincoln University.. `She is patient and thought provoking, encouraging her students to `learn to learn`, rather than reproducing someone else`s ideas.` Jo, Mum of Ellie, a GCSE Maths student and Alice, an ‘A’ level English student, Hessle High School. "My daughter`s confidence in English has dramatically improved in both herself and in the classroom, thanks to Tina." Sarah, Mum of Maddie, a 9 year old pupil, Welton Primary school.

What locations do you tutor in?

Most of my students reside in my local area in East Yorkshire. As I am offering online tuition only at present due to covid restrictions, I can offer tuition to students in all areas of England, UK.

What is your personal message to students?

Every student has the potential to reach their maximum potential and achieve their dreams. If you have a goal, you can achieve it if you have determination and commitment. In my own experience, I achieved very poor results in Maths as a school student. After completing my degree, I was offered a conditional place on my chosen teaching course in Manchester, if I achieved a Grade C or above in Maths. After enrolling on an Adult Education evening course and employing a private tutor, I achieved a Grade B in Maths, which enabled me to take up my place on the course.
