I’m Callum I have an engineering degree and a year of teaching experience in secondary maths from my PGDE which involved teaching 21 hours a week of classes up to 30 pupils at a time. I now teach 1-to-1 lessons online for all Key Stages, GCSE/National 5 and A level students/Highers (all exam boards,), as well as adults who need help with maths for career development. Going from teaching 30 pupils to 1 to 1 one tutoring means I can focus all the teaching energy onto you as the learner and understand your specific areas of need. Often I've been able to help people gain confidence and understanding in maths, within just a few lessons. I am friendly, engaging and very understanding and able to put learners at ease. But I am also passionate about helping people overcome their struggles with maths and so I make the lessons interesting, engaging and yet informative. This approach has been developed after several years experience of working with people who have barriers to learning like dyslexia, anxiety and ADHD. I use these skills to not just teach but also to help the learner be in a state of mind to learn and access the subject material. Every student has unique strengths and weaknesses and I always tailor each lesson to the individual student to give them help in the areas where they need it. For those who are struggling with Maths, I usually start by reinforcing the basics, then building up from there. I can also help with general exam techniques for maths exams. I really enjoy tutoring and helping my students to progress and overcome their difficulties. How would you describe your teaching style?

I use a formative assesment which means I conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. Formative assessments helps me identify concepts that students are struggling to understand, skills they are having difficulty acquiring, or learning standards they have not yet achieved so that adjustments can be made to lessons, instructional techniques, and academic support. The general goal is to collect detailed information that can be used to improve instruction and student learning while it’s happening rather than just teaching a lesson with out any feedback. What makes an assessment “formative” is not the design of a test, technique, or self-evaluation, per se, but the way it is used—i.e., to inform in-process teaching and learning modifications.

What qualifications do you have?

PGDE in Secondary Maths Bachelors with Honors in Engineering Higher/ A levels: Physics A, Maths B, English B, Chemisty C, Biology C

What is your personal message to students?

Hi and thank you for your interest in me as a tutor. Maths can be scary, confusing and a right old pain sometimes. But it doesn't have to be! I'm here to understand you, and where you struggle, and from there build your knowledge and understanding so that you can progress and grow in mathematical confidence. So to start we will establish where you are at using various tools and working from solid principals and basics we will build you up from there.
