How it works - for tutees

How Our Service Works

The Tutor Website enables parents and students to find in-person tutoring in their local area, searching by subject, level, postcode and location. We also provide a list of online tutors, who provide tuition through third-party websites like Skype.

The Tutor Website has a commission-free structure, which means we don’t add a markup, or take a cut of individual lessons. Instead, we let parents browse all of our tutors and message as many as they like for free to enquire about their suitability and availability.

Once parents have found a suitable tutor, we ask for a one-time fee of £18.99 in return for providing the tutor’s contact information. Payments are made online using PayPal, and can be processed even without a PayPal account. Once payment has been made to The Tutor Website, all lesson arrangements are then made between parent and tutor directly, using the tutor’s personal contact details.

What Makes Us Different?

Unlike most tutoring agencies, we don’t charge a commission on every lesson that parents and tutors arrange. Our commission-free model means that tutors don’t need to inflate their prices to compensate for commission cuts, and parents don’t pay any ongoing fees on top of tutors’ hourly rates.

We provide parents with full access to our database of tutors and let them decide who is the most suitable to teach their child based on their experience, qualifications and direct messages. Unlike other tutoring platforms, we don’t provide a ‘matching’ service based on artificial intelligence and algorithms. We believe that parents should have the freedom to choose a tutor based on their own criteria and that the process should be transparent.

FAQs for Students and Parents

How do I contact a tutor through The Tutor Website?

You can contact tutors through the site by creating a student/parent account for free. You can then message as many tutors as you like using the contact form on their profiles. You’ll be alerted by email and through your dashboard when a tutor responds.

Please note, we ask that parents and tutors don’t exchange contact information using the direct messaging system. Once you’ve chatted with a tutor and want to proceed with lesson arrangements, their contact details will be provided once you’ve paid our one-time fee of £18.99.

How much will lessons cost me?

Individual lessons are priced according to the rates set by the tutors themselves and should be agreed upon before proceeding with the first session. Our research suggests that the average freelance tutor in the UK charges between £15 and £41 per hour.

Please note that the one-time £18.99 fee charged by The Tutor Website is separate to any fees that the tutor charges. Although some tutors may offer their first lesson for free as way of compensation, we don’t expect them to do so.

How does the payment process work exactly?

Once you’ve found your perfect tutor and chatted with them through our direct messaging system, you can request their contact details to schedule lessons in private. Simply, click the ‘Request Contact Details’ button within the messaging system. Once the tutor accepts the request, you’ll be notified by email and taken to our secure payment page.

Payments are made online using PayPal and you don’t need to have a PayPal account to proceed. Once the payment has been made, you’ll receive an email with the tutor’s personal email address and telephone number to schedule lessons.

What if my preferred tutor doesn’t message me?

Although we ask tutors to respond to every message they receive, sometimes parents don’t hear back. We therefore advise that you contact a selection of suitable tutors, so you can compare approaches before deciding on who is the most suitable for your child’s needs.

What if I pay for a tutor’s contact details and don’t hear from them again?

If you pay for a tutor’s details and don’t hear from them again, we’ll credit your account, so that you can request the details of another tutor.

How do I leave a review of a tutor?

If you agree, we’ll send you an email 4 weeks after requesting a tutor’s details to ask for your feedback on their teaching. You’ll have the opportunity to rate them out of five and to leave a comment. Tutors can also respond to any feedback and ratings you provide.

Please note that the rating you give a tutor will impact their ranking position in search results on The Tutor Website.
