Samar H

Key stage 1 to A Level Maths tutor in Hammersmith, London

£30.00-50.00Academic tutor

I am a junior doctor working in South London at present. I studied medicine at Imperial College London, gaining both an MBBS qualification and an intercalated BSc. Teaching is something that I have remained passionate about throughout my time in secondary school, university and now as a junior doctor. I believe the key to being a good teacher is an eagerness to learn oneself, along with a keen sense of curiosity and intrigue about new subjects. Learning about new things has always filled me with excitement, and this has allowed me to come across fascinating opportunities. For example, my interest in learning about the process of human development allowed me to find an opportunity to carry out research in a fertility lab. I was able to witness with my own eyes the development of a human embryo from a single cell - a real privilege! As another example, I have always been fascinated by physics, particular astrophysics and space exploration. The curiosity to learn more pushed me to search for an opportunity to engage more in this field with my background as a medical professional. After some persistance, I was able to arrange a 3 month research placement with the European Space Agency. As a result I was able to spend 3 months working a few doors away from astronauts such as Tim Peake! I have always had an enthusiasm for learning new things, regardless of the subject. Despite having studied medicine, my interest in other fields has persisted. Even now, I`m trying to become more about computer science whilst holding a full time day job with busy on calls. I am keen to inspire a sense of curiosity in the students I teach. I have had many fascinating conversations with previous students about matters beyond the scope of their subjects, purely because they began to develop a keen enthusiasm for learning. I believe that as long as there is a deep curiosity to know more and a willingness to persist, a person can take their career in any direction they wish and stumble across things truly unique and exciting.

As a teacher, my main goal is to motivate students to do their best and extend their personal limits. I encourage students to construct their own learning in an environment that stimulates and helps students to realise their full potential. I have been very successful at accommodating diverse student needs by facilitating all styles of learners, offering individualised and extracurricular support and integrating effective materials. I have had the opportunity to teach students who functioned "below", "on", and "above" grade level. I can motivate the team with which I work for the establishment and implementation of clear objectives. I think that my experience responds to your requirements. As the leader of the team in my work, I had to do spill programs for encouraging learning by using a number of different manipulatives, hands-on activities, and various forms of technology, by incorporating class discussions, open-end questions, and cooperative learning. I am able to facilitate a highly interactive class atmosphere. In addition, I utilise weekly quizzes and monthly tests to track student progress, locate areas of weakness, and prepare students for final exams. Concomitant use of methods for individual and group work gives remarkable results. Setting individual goals to be achieved through teamwork is the basis of any of my ways of rallying movements.

Stefan R

(i)GCSE, A-level Maths tutor in London, London

£20.00-35.00Academic tutor

Hi! I'm Stefan. I'm a 4th year medical student at Imperial College London. At Imperial, my first two years were focused on preclinical theory readying me for my third, fifth and sixth which are clinical. This year I'm writing my BSc in Endocrinology so less of my time is in hospitals and more of it is self guided study and thesis writeup. So I've found myself having more time on hand and would like to start tutoring again! I am quite specialised in tutoring Medical School entrance. This includes personal statements, entrance exams (UKAT/BMAT), and interviews (both MMI and traditional). Although I am not too familiar with the 11+ or 13+, I have plenty of experience tutoring younger children mainly through an outreach programme run by my secondary school. I usually give the first 30 minutes of lessons free just to get settled and get a feel of the specific curriculum. I can also tutor online (especially under current circumstances) on whichever platform is preffered. If you want to know more (including my grades and experience) just drop me a message. Look forward to hearing from you!

I love exploring and explaining interesting and challenging maths problems and ideas, helping students to develop their problem solving skills, and discussing how and why mathematical theories and processes actually work. What Makes a Good Online Maths Tutor?

A good online maths tutor will have a solid understanding of the GCSE and A Level maths syllabus. An experienced tutor will be able to provide references for previous students and have a proven track record of helping students pass maths exams.

Although there is no official tutoring accreditation for online maths tutors in the UK, most are educated to at least degree level. How qualified an online maths tutor needs to be is up for the student and parent to decide. Some students may prefer to work with an experienced tutor who also holds a teaching qualification, whereas others may work better with recent maths graduates.

Some of the qualities that make a good online maths tutor, include patience and a clear communication style. One of the biggest benefits of tutoring is having a personalised learning approach and a good tutor will put the time and effort in to plan lessons and record progress.

How to Choose an Online Maths Tutor?

When choosing an online maths tutor, the first thing to do is to draw up your criteria. What do you consider to be most important? An online maths tutor with strong academic qualifications? One with a good track record of A Plus students? Or how about an online maths tutor with good interpersonal skills? Once you know what you’re looking for, you can create a shortlist and contact each one to arrange an initial meeting.

It’s also important to check whether or not your shortlist of online maths tutors have a DBS certificate. Although there’s no legal requirement to have a background check to tutor in the UK, those who are serious about the profession will have one.
