Leslie S

GCSE, A-level Biology tutor in Staplehurst, South East

£20.00Academic tutor

My name is Leslie and I am a fully qualified teacher practicing as a maths and science tutor, delivering high quality, bespoke, one to one lessons in the tutee’s home and online. I hold a B.Sc. degree in Zoology from London University, a Graduate Diploma in Pharmacology and a Masters in Pharmacology from the University of East London. Parents have testified that I have a patient, understanding manner and am passionate about enabling my students to learn. This is achieved by assessing gaps in their learning and by developing their understanding of core concepts, thus bridging these gaps. I have a thorough understanding of the syllabus and question types in the new GCSE and A-level syllabi and have a wide range of resources such as past papers and worked answers in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Practice in answering these questions boosts the student’s confidence, motivating them to fulfil their potential. Ultimately, this confidence helps my students to develop an appetite for learning so they enjoy the process of acquiring knowledge and obtain good grades in GCSE and/or A-level to secure a place in the sixth form in their school of choice, or a place at a top university.

Lily L

A Level Economics, GCSE Maths tutor in Burnham-on-Crouch, East England

£25.00-50.00Academic tutor

I am a qualified Maths teacher, having participated in the Teach First programme 2017-2019, gaining a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics Education from the Institute of Education, UCL, and have taught maths across KS3 and GCSE. Prior to becoming a teacher, I studied at the London School of Economics and hold a BSc in Economics and Economic History. I am passionate about education and teaching maths. Maths is such a useful subject and can be applied to all aspects of our lives, however it is sometimes a very tricky subject to access due to its cumulative nature. If a crucial part is missed, then a student may struggle to grasp everything that follows and give up. Given that there are so many ways to explain the same concept, what works for one student may not make sense for another, and that is why just a short time spent one-to-one can have huge benefits for a student. One of the biggest challenges in teaching maths is that it is very binary - either students 'get it' or not. Both the student and the teacher sometimes need to be persistent until they have that 'eureka' moment where it makes sense. As a tutor, I know the importance of being patient, and I am always prepared to explain the same concept in several different ways. Moreover, it is important to me to help my students develop the necessary metacognitive skills ('thinking about thinking') to become effective problem solvers and independent learners. Outside of academia, I have taught sailing and trained teams for ocean rowing expeditions, and found this extremely rewarding. I recently took a career break to row across the Pacific Ocean as part of a team of four women, setting a new world record in the process. I learned a huge amount about what it means to be resilient, and hope to share this with my students in the context of mathematics.

Lottie R

Primary English tutor in Berkhamstead, South East

£35.00-0.00Academic tutor

Once upon a time, there was a little girl called Lottie, who had blonde curly hair and green eyes. She lived in a town called Guildford, just south of the big city known as London. She lived with her Mother and their three cats and was surrounded by happiness and love. As Lottie grew older she had various jobs, all revolving around childcare because she knew that was where her skills and passion lay. Lottie’s first childcare position was in 2004 when she had a sole charge position for 3 children under the age of 7. Since then she has Nannied or Babysat in addition to a variety of other roles including as a Support Worker for Social Services, Teaching Assistant, and Special Needs Carer. No matter the role, Lottie uses her imagination to entertain children, play games, read stories and all the time keeping them safe and happy. She has also spent days and nights working for families on an on-call basis. Many of these families enjoyed the fun yet professional way she interacted with their children so asked her to come back. After completing a PGCE with QTS in 2009, Lottie went on to become a qualified teacher and is qualified to teach all subjects to children from 4 - 11 years old. She specialised in SEN education with her first year of teaching taking place in a school for non-verbal children with complex learning difficulties. Having fallen in love with a Canadian, the next chapter took Lottie to the bright lights of Toronto, Canada where she nannied part-time in addition to a full-time job recruiting teachers to join the education reform in Abu Dhabi. The little girl grew up into a confident woman who enjoys setting herself challenges. These characteristics led her to spend time teaching and travelling in India and Africa. The first of such trips led Lottie to set up a non-profit organisation upon her return to life in England because she knew she could do something to help others. This opened up doors for a 3-year stint in South Africa - one year of which was spent managing volunteer community development projects in Zululand. She then slowly travelled her way around the perimeter of the country in a caravan before camping through Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana. In the most recent chapter of her life, Lottie returned to England where she now lives on a narrowboat with her boyfriend and dog. From here she continues to manage the social enterprise with education placements in rural South Africa and offer online business development and coaching for the courageous souls who are living life to the beat of their own drum. Now Lottie is looking to get back into working with children themselves rather than via a managerial/office-based position. She is excited to be tutoring children in Maths, English, and Science and finding a way to make learning fun, accessible for all. Lottie has grown from being a little girl with blonde curly hair and green eyes to a woman with less blond, still curly hair and green eyes who has developed an array of skills through her varied experiences both at home and abroad. She still has a huge passion for children’s learning and equality in the classroom and from this has come a passion for working with children, establishing a relationship and supporting their development.

Manjot K

GCSE/KS3/Primary School Science tutor in Solihull, Midlands (West)

£15.00-25.00Academic tutor

My name is Manjot and I am an undergraduate Pharmacy student at De Montfort University. Maths and Science can be challenging and confusing for some. My vision is to offer a pathway to assist students to achieve their educational goals. I would love to work with students that are looking for guidance and experience to help drive them to succeed in their goals. I am an online based tutor who uses practical simulations, exam questions as well as a variety of learning styles to create an understanding and easy-going learning environment. My approach is to identify areas of improvement, and address these through demonstration and supervised work, then reinforce the learning areas via revision, structured work and assessment. The ultimate aim is to make sure tutees reach a point at which they no longer require a tutor. In 2016, I completed my GCSEs, and obtained 9 A*-B's and 1C. In 2018, I completed my A levels in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. I studied Physics to AS level and obtained a place to study Pharmacy at University while at sixth form. I am passionate about embracing learning and have worked as a student and teaching consultant previously, hence I understand the challenges which students face within the classroom. Studying an intense course such as pharmacy, I am aware of what is required to get into a good university and study one of the toughest subjects. Thus, I can help students prepare for further education. I aim to create a good rapport with my students and make their learning as enjoyable as possible by breaking down their misconceptions into very simple and easy-to-understand steps. Send me a message if you think I'd be a great fit! I love to work with all kinds of individuals of all different abilities. I'll always endeavour to give you my best and ensure that I teach in a way that suits you or your child.

A good online maths tutor will have a solid understanding of the GCSE and A Level maths syllabus. An experienced tutor will be able to provide references for previous students and have a proven track record of helping students pass maths exams.

Although there is no official tutoring accreditation for online maths tutors in the UK, most are educated to at least degree level. How qualified an online maths tutor needs to be is up for the student and parent to decide. Some students may prefer to work with an experienced tutor who also holds a teaching qualification, whereas others may work better with recent maths graduates.

Some of the qualities that make a good online maths tutor, include patience and a clear communication style. One of the biggest benefits of tutoring is having a personalised learning approach and a good tutor will put the time and effort in to plan lessons and record progress.

How to Choose an Online Maths Tutor?

When choosing an online maths tutor, the first thing to do is to draw up your criteria. What do you consider to be most important? An online maths tutor with strong academic qualifications? One with a good track record of A Plus students? Or how about an online maths tutor with good interpersonal skills? Once you know what you’re looking for, you can create a shortlist and contact each one to arrange an initial meeting.

It’s also important to check whether or not your shortlist of online maths tutors have a DBS certificate. Although there’s no legal requirement to have a background check to tutor in the UK, those who are serious about the profession will have one.
