I have extensive experience teaching KS3, GCSE and A Level English and KS3 Drama. I previously taught the GCSE resits for six years. Over this period, I acquired a significant insight into the GCSEs and A Level programmes. I worked heavily with GCSE Level 3 students, supporting them to achieve Level 4 - 8. I have witnessed some incredible improvements in my students and was able to build one students confidence so they shot from Level 2 to a working Level 7 in a year of tuition. My A Level students gained a greater insight into the texts they studied because of my studies of Literature and Language at A level. I can help you or someone you know by scaffolding their knowledge of English - whatever area they may want help with. I have a strong background in poetry and creative writing. In particular, I can help develop skills required for GCSEs and A Level such as: CORE READING SKILLS: - Critical thinking and inference (how to interpret a text and words in particular) - Understanding language and structural features (both of which are integral to showing a knowledge of how texts work) - Deconstructing unseen texts (a key skill that the Language papers require) - Comparing/contrasting ideas in texts (the literature and language papers now put a heavy emphasis on this skill) CORE WRITING SKILLS: - PEA/PEE paragraphs (this connects with ESSAY writing as well) - Descri ptive writing - Non-fiction writing I can additionally offer more advanced skills such as: READING: - Advanced/sophisticated language and structural feature spotting - Applying context to literature (especially Victorian for the likes of `A Christmas Carol` and `Jekyll & Hyde`) WRITING: - Sophisticated and effective development of vocabulary (fiction and non-fiction) - Clever use of structural features to construct a story or descri ptive piece of writing I have been singing and playing the piano for over a decade and frequently accompany and musically direct my choir, individuals, and shows. I`ve recently obtained Grade 8 Music Theory and can offer lessons on piano/singing performance and technique, composition, improvisation and music theory.

I have recently retired as Head of Chemistry in a successful Kent Grammar school, which has allowed me to focus on private tutoring. I have over 30 years experience of preparing exam students for the major exam boards, giving me a detailed knowledge of the requirements of the GCSE and A-Level syllabi. I use many and varied resources from books, notes and worksheets, to past papers and their markschemes, which I use to consolidate learning. I have developed many of my resources for online use through my most recent employment at a leading Kent Independent school, where I taught whole classes using Google Classroom and Meet. COVID-19 Update: Please note that all face to face tuition is currently suspended, however I am more than happy to offer tuition via Zoom, Google Meet or Skype. My home office is equipped with a visualiser webcam so that I can use a whiteboard and show written documents/ textbooks during online lessons, and my dual screen setup makes sharing powerpoints and other files easy, and a natural part of many online lessons.

I live in Ashford Kent and at present I tutor online using Zoom although normally I travel to your house to teach. I give my first lesson free. I stopped full-time teaching after many happy and successful years to build my tutoring business and to share my extensive knowledge and experience through private tutoring as I would still like to make a difference in enabling children to achieve their full potential and to improve their levels. For tutoring, some children may be in need of curriculum catch-up, others may need their confidence building and some may need to prepare for the Kent test. I am very experienced in doing all of these either in short-term sessions or on a more long-term basis. Although I have taught all age groups, my teaching career also includes many years in Yr 5 and 6 which means I am experienced in the Literacy and Numeracy relevant to the 11+. From my previous 11+ tutoring, I am well acquainted with the content of the 11 plus exam and the strategies needed to succeed and I have the ability to prepare children for the demands of the test as well as up-levelling their writing and improving their maths and reading. For the Kent test, I will teach all of the types of Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning using the best strategies for success and speed, find any gaps in English and maths content and prepare the tutee thoroughly for the 11+ exam. Whichever learning your child needs, I will make it fun.

I write material for 11+ tests and am a specialist tutor in this field. I have spent many years as a primary school teacher and as an English teacher at a top prep school, so cover maths, English and the 11+. If you would like to discuss issues surrounding the Kent Test and other 11+ tests around the country, I'd be delighted to help. I am currently looking to finalise my details for September as I find myself booked up well in advance. I have the largest battery of testing material that you will find anywhere as I have all the resources I've written for other organisations as well as that which is commercially available. My teaching style is patient and nurturing, with a strong focus on addressing the particular needs of tutees rather than following any sort of curriculum. The needs of the child supersede those of any tests or exams! I only teach from home as I have a young family, but will work online if required.
|Online tutor:||I tutor via Skype and Zoom but can also teach in person if you're able to get to Canterbury|
