Lily L
A Level Economics, GCSE Maths tutor in Burnham-on-Crouch, East England
£25.00-50.00Academic tutorI am a qualified Maths teacher, having participated in the Teach First programme 2017-2019, gaining a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics Education from the Institute of Education, UCL, and have taught maths across KS3 and GCSE. Prior to becoming a teacher, I studied at the London School of Economics and hold a BSc in Economics and Economic History. I am passionate about education and teaching maths. Maths is such a useful subject and can be applied to all aspects of our lives, however it is sometimes a very tricky subject to access due to its cumulative nature. If a crucial part is missed, then a student may struggle to grasp everything that follows and give up. Given that there are so many ways to explain the same concept, what works for one student may not make sense for another, and that is why just a short time spent one-to-one can have huge benefits for a student. One of the biggest challenges in teaching maths is that it is very binary - either students 'get it' or not. Both the student and the teacher sometimes need to be persistent until they have that 'eureka' moment where it makes sense. As a tutor, I know the importance of being patient, and I am always prepared to explain the same concept in several different ways. Moreover, it is important to me to help my students develop the necessary metacognitive skills ('thinking about thinking') to become effective problem solvers and independent learners. Outside of academia, I have taught sailing and trained teams for ocean rowing expeditions, and found this extremely rewarding. I recently took a career break to row across the Pacific Ocean as part of a team of four women, setting a new world record in the process. I learned a huge amount about what it means to be resilient, and hope to share this with my students in the context of mathematics.

Lyrica W
all 11 Plus, all English tutor in Lawford, East England
£20.00-30.00Academic tutorThroughout my time in education I have been given the opportunity to help others develop their skills in ways they were always told they couldn’t. I believe a teacher's role is to teach the subject, but also to encourage and persuade others to find their passion and love for the subject. I have taught German from the ages of 5+, I took a group of students' reading from a grade 3 to a grade 6 and I had a small group of peers that I was enlisted to help with their english GCSE, whilst doing my own. The most rewarding feeling was having someone turn to me and thank me when their grade had gone from a 4 to a 7 after being encouraged to find their motivation. My style is one of patience and humour so that my students want to learn and never believe that they can’t achieve their goals. I also believe that there is a set of rules to write an essay that lead to top grades in every essay subject, if applied correctly. Since learning and applying my method, I have never failed to achieve the top grades. I’m a 21 year old university student with a passion for modernist literature, creative writing and psychology. I have experience in teaching children between the ages of 5-19, in English literature, English language and creative writing. Having been regarded as ‘gifted and talented’ throughout education, I was enlisted as a student teacher to help my peers and my school’s exam success increased by 20% with my assistance. I also completed a creative writing A level at 14 and a citizenship GCSE at 12. I have always had a passion for helping others and this passion is so strong that it led me to Buddhism, which I still practice today. One day I would love to be a teacher or a lecturer as I find it extremely rewarding and I feel like the education sector of society needs more teachers who love what they do and who are both patient and respected by the children. I currently teach 11+ and creative writing courses to school children. I also have multiple GCSE students who are excelling under my influence and who have increased academically and in confidence. I am also working as a writing consultant, designing an app and website to assist people of all ages and abilities in their writing and linguistic skills.
